Does my animal need a skin vet?

If your pet is itchy -> there is always a reason! It is not normal for animals to lick, clean or nibble themselves obsessively. Medications for itch may mask the symptoms, but can be associated with side-effects. It is most important for the quality of life of the animal and for the contentment of the owner to identify cause(s) to attempt to deal with these, and to see if anything else can be done.

Some conditions are life-long, but nearly all can be managed so that quality of life is maximised. New treatments are constantly being developed.

With the expertise of someone with a special interest in animal skin disease Animal Dermatology Canterbury is here to help you get to the bottom of your pet’s skin problem.

These may include:

  • Hypersensitivities or allergies; environmental or food allergies resulting in itchy skin

  • Ear infections, new or chronic

  • Nail disease, paw and pad conditions

  • Hair loss, with or without itching or inflammation

  • Skin infections, bacterial, yeast, fungal

  • Immune-mediated or auto-immune skin conditions

  • Hormonal or endocrine problems, particularly hypothyroidism and cushings disease

  • Skin cancers and tumours

Involving your vet:

Your skin vet works with your usual vet as part of your pet’s total vet health team. Your GP vet oversees all other aspects of your pets care. Many routine skin problems can be handled by your usual vet, but Animal Dermatology Canterbury is here to provide expertise for the skin issues that are more difficult to diagnose and treat.
